The biggest mistake I have personally ever done and see many other people do when it comes recruiting people into their network marketing business with MLM leads is actually buying leads from an MLM lead company.

There just might be some network marketers out there that do have some success with recruiting people when they buy MLM leads from a company that sells MLM leads.  Over all I find that most people just do not have the success they would hope for and end up spending more money than they make with buying MLM leads.

The industry we are in here is referred to as network marketing and so therefore it involves marketing.  When you use a company that sells MLM leads then you basically are just taking the marketing out.  Well the only marketing you are doing with these MLM leads quite often is telemarketing.  You see because these people on the MLM lead lists have not asked you specifically to call them or email them, you are essentially telemarketing to them, simply put.

What makes buying MLM leads such a waste of time and big mistake is that most of these people on this list are essentially what is referred to as tire kickers.  You are pretty much wasting your time and money with these people.  The only satisfaction you often get from this method of marketing is that you feel busy.  However, would you want to just feel busy or would you rather accomplish results.

So how do get around this mistake and actually accomplish results when recruiting with MLM leads?  Its simple.  What you do is put the marketing back into network marketing.  You want to learn how to generate your own MLM leads.  It really is not that hard to generate your own MLM leads as long as you take the time to learn how to do it.  This is your business and you should take some time to really learn it and how to consistently have new prospects to talk to that you have personally generated.  This allows you to remain in control of the kind of people you are exposing your business to.

Do not waste your time with actually buying tire kickers from companies who only want to sell them to you for a quick buck.  These companies are only capitalizing off your unwillingness to generate your own MLM leads and not learn marketing.

People are so often disappointed in MLM advertising because words and phrasing that seem magical to them get absolutely zero response. They figure it must be something else. Maybe the ad didn’t really run. Maybe the publisher got the phone number wrong.

OK. I admit it. I’m cheating. I know people have these thoughts because I used to have them myself, back when I first started advertising widely.

And it’s way worse now. There’s a lot more competiton … especially on the internet, where you can advertise for free in many cases.

And that’s just Part 1.

Part 2 is, because of the internet and because there is so much more competition, you have a thousand times more ads than 15 years ago. Every day, your potential prospect is subjected to hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of ads.

Great ads - ads that used to pull like crazy - wash over your prospects like water off a duck’s back. Understand their viewpoint. They can’t possibly afford to pay any attention to that stuff, or they’ll never get anything done! So they ignore it all.

If you tell them you’re giving away something free - which EVERYONE does these days - they ignore you. And if they don’t ignore you, then they don’t believe you. They’ve been hooked before. They KNOW there is a catch.

Ninety per-cent of the population does not want to be sold to. And here comes you, wanting them to call you so you can sell to them. They didn’t just fall off a cabbage truck. They know the game.

So it’s much, much, much more difficult today to get an ad to perform well than it was 15 years ago. ESPECIALLY when you’re talking about email.

What can make the difference? What can get you the result you want? Well, mostly it’s a matter of time. You have to build the relationship with someone. If you’ve done that, and they see you as someone they can trust, you’re on the right track.

If you have talked with them and not tried to sell them something, they may well feel comfortable in calling you up.

Recently I spoke with someone who has devoted the time to build relationships. He understands how the game works. And now his MLM company is making a special offer, and he wants to send out an email to really get his prospects’ attention.

This company is giving away $84 worth of their top 2 Wonderful products. My friend knows his network marketing products are Wonderful, and everybody in his company knows they’re Wonderful. The problem is, my friend needs to give away these products to people who are not in his company.

Well, “giving away” is not technically accurate. Actually, you have to pay $30 to join my friend’s company in order to get these “free” products. And he wants to advertise this great deal using the word, “free.”

Is it a good deal? Probably. Everybody in that company thinks it’s a great deal. A lot of them want to run an ad that says, “FREE! Get $84 worth of our top 2 products! Call me.”

Let’s say my friend sends this ad in an email to 1000 prospects on a list that he has built - a non-buyer’s list.

Of the 1,000 emails, let’s figure 150 get opened. That’s a 15% open rate, a very good result for any non-buyer’s list. The only reason the open rate is this high is that these people have seen my friend’s name before, they know who he is, they know he provides some value, even though they have never bought from him or joined his business.

So 150 sets of eyeballs read this email. And what they see immediately is the offer: “Get $84.45 worth of Wonderful Product FREE! Call me!”

Ninety per-cent of the email openers now say, “This is BS. Nothing is free. If I call him, he’ll try to sell me something.”

This leaves my friend with 15 real prospects of the 1,000 names he started with. Ninety per-cent of these guys say, “Well, this is pretty interesting $84 worth of free Wonderful Product. And I know this guy. He’s sent me a lot of emails. He’s definitely persistent. I gotta run out and get a root canal this morning, but as soon as I get back, I’ll give him a call. Or maybe after lunch, if I can eat.”

But when they get back, my friend is no longer on their mind, and he never hears from them.

So now he has 1.5 - let’s optimistically round it off to 2 - prospects left. They think, “This is pretty interesting. I know Joe’s a good guy. Wonder what these products are? Lemme call him up and find out. Nice guy, giving away free products.”

So they call Joe up and he tells them about the free product. And he tells them that to QUALIFY for the free product, all they have to do is spend $30 to join his company to get that $84 worth of free Wonderful Product.

And do you know what is going on in this ungrateful prospect’s mind? They are thinking, “Huh. Thirty dollars is not free.” And not only do they not take your deal, they feel like you were manipulating them like everybody else tries to do, so they opt out of your email list. They don’t trust you anymore.

Always tell them the exact deal. If there’s a catch, always tell them exactly what the “catch” is. Never say “free” when it’s not free. Trying to cover it up with some clever wording, as many people do, will only destroy your relationships with prospects. Build the “know, like, & trust” with people and never do anything to put that relationship in danger.
